2017: The Year of Video Dating

This blog is approaching its 4th year come April 2017. In those 4 years, we have seen the rise of dating apps and big name online dating sites playing catchup by developing similar apps of their own. We have also seen the integration of social media into dating sites and apps, namely to upload photos from social media. However, the one medium that has surprisingly not made it to the market in online dating are videos.

It is impossible to imagine that the major dating sites and apps are not thinking about videos. In 2016, we saw YouTube live streaming, Facebook Live, and videos on Instagram. It won’t be long before videos will come to online dating and replace photos and text profile. Think of how many bad dates video profiles could potentially save! I believe video integration in online dating has already been developed and will debut in 2017.

Just like how you pay a subscription to stream videos on Netflix, I predict the next business model for online dating that uses the video format will be pay-to-view where you would give the user two options: 1) pay a monthly subscription to view all video profiles, or 2) upload a video of yourself and get a free 6-month subscription to view video profiles. The latter would be the best route to motivate people to create/upload videos and increase the number of video profiles out there.

So forget about taking selfies in 2017. Work on being a video romeo.
